93 WPM

December 18, 2009

According to an impromptu Typing Test, I can type 93 words per minute (with, by the way, 100% accuracy). I really find that rather gratifying.

I’ve been typing since I was a teenager, anyway—taught myself touch-typing from a chart my mother had lying around from when she was a secretary, on her old Royal manual typewriter (it was like a word processor, kids, except that it had no electronics and you had to cover over your mistakes with this white goop and then retype them).

There are those who avidly predict the advent of voice-recognition software and the death of the keyboard. Heh… maybe, but not in my lifetime…

Alas, altough I spend hours at the keyboard every day I got 36 WPM wtih 86% accuracy. I think I will have to keep my day job. This is just another door that has closed for me. I will never work data entry and I will never be a waitress. I will also never be a contestant on Survivor.

However, you have other sterling qualities which I do not possess—including that day job, which is one I’d never be able to do… Typing well is essential for what I do for a living, but not so much for waiting tables, perhaps, or for appearing on television.
