The Future Ain’t What It Used to Be

A palimpsest is a much-overwritten scroll or parchment; before paper became widely available, good writing surfaces were hard to come by, and sometimes even irreplaceable texts were sacrificed to the monk’s knife. But a palimpsest still bears the ghosts of its history, which may be recoverable given enough time and talent.

Palimpsest” is a novella by sf writer Charles Stross that covers the whole of human history—more than once, as agents of the Stasis rewrite the parts that lead to Earth’s extinction. But little bits remain; even an organization that controls all of time and space has its limits…
